Welcome to the Department

Much could be written about the Osijek School of Chemistry, mostly thanks to the work and achievements of two of the most famous Croatian Nobel laureates, Lavoslav Ružička and Vladimir Prelog, who spent part of their education in Osijek. Despite their world-renowned work, there was no systematic education of chemists in Osijek until the beginning of 1961, when the Pedagogical Academy was founded, which included the Biology and Chemistry study group. In 2005, the Department of Chemistry was established as an independent scientific and educational unit of the Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in Osijek. Shortly after its establishment, the Department of Chemistry launched an undergraduate study program in chemistry, followed by a teaching and research graduate study program in chemistry. We are proud of all our former and current students, whose voices can be heard in many elementary, secondary and university classrooms, but also in the world of science and industry.
Studying at the Department of Chemistry includes basic chemistry subjects with practical work of students in small groups in modern equipped laboratories, involvement in work on scientific and professional projects, and acquisition of competences for independent research and interdisciplinary research. The Department of Chemistry is a backbone for creativity and progress, where through scientific, educational and professional activities, a collaborative relationship between students and teachers is sought.
Chemistry, a basic (fundamental) science, represents a social and scientific vertical and is the driving force of modern industry. Over the years of its operation, the Department of Chemistry has educated a large number of teachers and professors of chemistry and top scientists. Soon, we hope and believe that we will proudly say: “We have a new Prelog, Ružička, Briht, Kolbah, Seiwert…”. Join us!
Sincerely,
The Management of the Department of Chemistry
